Chema Madoz + Antonio Machado

Why do you come to me, hidden stream, with life I never asked for nor expected?
For this school project, I had to create a photograph inspired by a verse from Antonio Machado, using the visual language of Chema Madoz as a reference. The verse I chose was:
“Di, ¿por qué acequia escondida,
agua, vienes hasta mí,
manantial de nueva vida
de donde nunca bebí?”
— Anoche cuándo dormía, Antonio Machado
I wanted to approach this verse through symbolism and metaphor, in the spirit of Madoz’s conceptual work. I used a red leaf to represent the heart — the vital core of each person. The drops of water on the leaf stand for the unexpected, silent flow of life. They symbolize the “spring of new life” mentioned in the poem, arriving from an unseen place.
Like Madoz, I focused on simplicity and the poetic potential of everyday objects. The image is not meant to illustrate the poem literally, but to offer a visual interpretation that invites reflection — a metaphor for how something unknown can reach us quietly and change us from within.
